The metabolic syndrome is characterized by three or more risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The risk factors include abdominal obesity, high levels of triglycerides, low levels of “good” HDL cholesterol, hypertension and high levels of blood glucose (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute). Assessments of quality of life and memory complaints were completed among 37 people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 120 people with normal cognitive function. For the participants, who were 65 years and older and living in the community, quality of life (QOL) was not significantly different between those with normal and mildly impaired cognitive function. Among those with mild cognitive impairment, having memory complaints did predict a lower quality of life. Depression was associated with lower QOL in both groups.

Men need more awareness of osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, the condition of porous and fragile bones, is often associated with women. After all, an estimated one-tenth of women ages 60 years and older have osteoporosis, and 61% of all osteoporotic fractures occur in women. Broken bones, a consequence of osteoporosis, can lead to hospitalization, disability and death. (International Osteoporosis Foundation). However, osteoporosis is also found in men and a new report details the need for diagnosis and treatment.
