Recognizing the Innovators: ICAA introduces its 2009 award-winners

Look up “innovation” on Wikipedia, and you’ll find the following sentence in this entry:

“For innovation to occur, something more than the generation of a creative idea or insight is required: the insight must be put into action to make a genuine difference, resulting for example in new or altered business processes within the organization, or changes in the products and services provided.”

An idea or insight put into action to make a difference—that simple phrase describes innovation at its most elemental. Yet it is anything but simple to innovate successfully.

Active Aging Week 2009-1069

Active Aging Week 2009

With twin goals of education and fun, Active Aging Week 2009 swept through the last week of September. Organizations large and small hosted events that allowed older adults to enjoy their favorite activities and to try something new.

As the ICAA’s annual health promotion event, Active Aging Week puts the power of planning into the hands of the individuals and teams who host events. This philosophy allows organizers to determine the number and nature of activities for a customized program appropriate to the intended audiences.

ICAA at eight: helping the industry with new strategies to change the way we age by Marilynn Larkin, MA

From 2000 to 2003, I was editor of a monthly trade publication for clinicians and providers in assisted living and nursing facilities. It seemed like an interesting startup, but nothing I had to pay attention to. My perspective changed over the next few years, however, as those press releases documented some impressive partnerships between ICAA and established organizations dealing with the needs of adults over 50, and programs aimed at “Changing the way we age®.”

Incentives reward participation during Active Aging Week

The goal of Active Aging Week, ICAA’s annual health promotion event, is to encourage people to take action. Its tenets are simple and appealing. Whether a single activity or a daily parade of programming, Active Aging Week events are:

• educational
• fun
• free

These events are planned and hosted by professionals and older adults in retirement communities, community services such as seniors centers and area agencies on aging, wellness centers and health clubs. The activities include walks, demonstrations, many varieties of exercise classes, lectures, health fairs, music performances, spelling bees, and friendly competitions.

Set your goals for Active Aging Week 2009-1015

Set your goals for Active Aging Week 2009

The goal is simple for Active Aging Week, an annual health promotion event promoted by the International Council on Active Aging®: Give as many older adults as possible the means to experience wellness activities and exercise in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere. ICAA accomplishes that goal through you, our colleagues who plan and host the week’s events.

Whether a single presentation or class or a week filled with activities, your work introduces older adults and their families to the concepts of active aging. Because so many of you have hosted Active Aging Week, each year thousands of older adults find opportunities to stay engaged in life through the dimensions of wellness (physical, spiritual, cognitive/intellectual, social, emotional, professional/vocational).
