The positive impact of physical activity on both mental and physical health are well-documented, point out the authors of a new study. However, what is less known is how and why physical activity reduces feelings of distress. For this study, the term “distress” meant symptoms of depression and anxiety. The team focused on the relationships among distress, physical activity, mastery (a sense of control) and self-esteem (feelings of self-worth).

Heart disease, a term that includes a number of cardiovascular conditions, remains the number-one cause of death in the United States. A recent spate of studies indicates that depression not only leads to heart disease, it also increases the risk of death.

Although January snow may be building up outside many doorways, gardeners can stay active by tending indoor plants. In a recent study, 18 residents in a low-income assisted living facility attended two-hour interactive horticulture classes over four weeks. They reported significant increases in mastery, self-rated health and self-rated happiness, even from a simple task like maintaining a houseplant.

A separate study showed that outdoor gardening also has physical benefits.
