At the recent World Diabetes Congress, updated figures showed that the prevalence of diabetes is rising at a rapid rate. In a call to action, the diabetes federation’s president said that unhealthy lifestyles are fueling the diabetes epidemic. He called on governments to make sure that healthy life choices are available and affordable, and urged them to do their utmost to help prevent diabetes and other so-called lifestyle diseases.

Data from the Current Population Survey tracked the sources of income for people over age 65. In 2008, income sources included earnings, pensions, personal savings and public programs such as Social Security and Supplemental Security Income. The most common income sources were Social Security and pensions.

Want to save money? Treat chronic disease

People who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and/or are overweight also have higher healthcare costs. Healthcare costs were approximately $2,000 higher for people with these conditions, according to a study in last week’s issue of ICAA Research Review (9[34] 2009). An unrelated study looked at healthcare costs for older adults if these conditions were treated successfully.
