Physical activity associated with memory function
To explore the relationship between physical activity and memory in people with mild cognitive decline, 30 people diagnosed with mild Alzheimer’s disease and 17 individuals with mild cognitive impairment were assessed for cognitive function and memory as well as their levels of physical activity. After measurement of their walking speed, they were categorized as walking at slow speed or at a normal speed.

To objectively measures levels of physical activity, a sample of people 40 years and older participants in the NHANES (2003-2004) wore accelerometers for seven days. Their balance was measured with the Romberg test.

Moderate intensity physical activity can lower risk of stroke
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted, either because of a burst blood vessel or an obstruction. Women are more likely than men to experience a stroke, points out information on the HealthyWomen website, a risk that rises at older ages. Among the studies presented at the International Stroke Conference 2014, one looked at the relationships between different levels of physical activity and women’s risk of stroke.

WHO releases fact sheet on physical activity
The World Health Organization released an updated fact sheet on physical activity. Setting the stage, the document explains that physical activity means movement that requires energy expenditure as opposed to planned, structured exercise, which is a subset of physical activity.

Australia doubles recommendations for physical activity
Along with many countries of the world (including the United States and Canada), the guidelines for physical activity in Australia recommended 150 minutes/week of moderate-intensity physical activity for adults. A new update of those guidelines increases that amount to 150-300 minutes of physical activity per week. And, reducing sedentary time is included.
