There is a high prevalence of obesity, diabetes and hypertension in the US state of Mississippi, pointed out the authors of an intervention designed to help reduce risk factors for these chronic health conditions. To reach people who could benefit from increased knowledge about healthy eating and increased in physical activity, they reached out to churches.

Lifestyle factors also lower risk of death

A separate study showed that four of the same lifestyle factors—regular exercise, eating a Mediterranean-style diet, keeping a normal weight and not smoking—protected against coronary heart disease as well as the early buildup of calcium deposits in heart arteries, and reduced the chance of death from all causes by 80% over an eight-year period.

Better lifestyle choices lower risk of stroke

Earlier this year in ICAA Research Review No. 10, it was reported that people who adhered to the American Heart Association’s Simple 7 lifestyle goals (physical activity, healthy weight, healthy diet, healthy cholesterol levels, normal blood pressure, controlled blood sugar levels and not smoking) reduced their risk of cancer. A new report states that even a small improvement in meeting these goals also reduces the risk of stroke.
