A separate study showed that four of the same lifestyle factors—regular exercise, eating a Mediterranean-style diet, keeping a normal weight and not smoking—protected against coronary heart disease as well as the early buildup of calcium deposits in heart arteries, and reduced the chance of death from all causes by 80% over an eight-year period.

Earlier this year in ICAA Research Review No. 10, it was reported that people who adhered to the American Heart Association’s Simple 7 lifestyle goals (physical activity, healthy weight, healthy diet, healthy cholesterol levels, normal blood pressure, controlled blood sugar levels and not smoking) reduced their risk of cancer. A new report states that even a small improvement in meeting these goals also reduces the risk of stroke.
