For older adults, once-a-week strength training is a temporary measure
In the same issue as the ACSM Position Stand, a separate study concentrated on strength training. The researchers noted that stopping exercise (called detraining) can lead to significant declines in strength in a short period of time. Exercise beyond physical activity key point in updated position stand
Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, “physical activity” refers to movement during daily activities such as housework or walking to the store, while “exercise” refers to movement that is planned, progressive and repetitive, such as strength training or walking for fitness. The Position Stand is consistent with the US Physical Activity Guidelines, plus it adds more specifics on types of exercise and length of time spent exercising.

Chronic exercise lowers risk of chronic pain
Recently, ICAA Research Review reported findings from Norway’s Nord-Trøndelag Health Study, a large population survey launched in 1984–1986 by gathering health histories on 75,000 people. In that report, engagement in creative and cultural activities was linked to good health (ICAA Research Review, 11[20] June 2011). A new report associates physical activity with good health in the form of less pain.
