Exercise improves life for people with heart failure
When the heart cannot pump enough blood, the condition is called heart failure. Coronary artery disease, hypertension and diabetes are common causes of heart failure (CDC). Excess body weight is also associated with heart failure, found a research team that examined responses to a questionnaire completed by 36,873 women ages 48-83 and 43,487 men ages 45-79 (Circulation: Heart Failure, rapid access, April 7, 2009). The results demonstrated that the higher the body mass index and waist circumference, the higher the risk for heart failure.

Caregivers gain multiple benefits from exercise intervention
A caregiver aids a person who is incapacitated. The Family Caregiver Alliance states that 8.9 million unpaid caregivers in the US (family, friends and neighbors) help a person 50 years or older who has dementia. Caregivers have demanding roles that can lead to chronic stress along with risks for poor mental and physical health, point out the authors of a new study. Physical activity has proven physical and mental health benefits. Could caregivers help themselves by participating in physical activity?

Moderate intensity approximates 100 steps a minute
For overall health, older adults are advised to accumulate 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week (often by brisk walking) in addition to strength training. Moderate intensity is 5 or 6 on a 10-point scale of effort, or breathing harder but still able to talk (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Older adults also are encouraged to wear pedometers to count the number of steps they take. The goal of a recent analysis was to define how many steps are need to meet the moderate-intensity guideline.
